The proximity to Pan de Azúcar National Park and the
beaches located south of the city like Portofino support tourism
development.
Chañaral currently has over 13,000 inhabitants. In the years 1875 to
1952 Chañaral was a village of no more than 3,000 inhabitants, but by
this time a city of importance for the Atacama Region. The years between
1960 and 1982 are marked by exceptional growth: The beginnings of the El
Salvador mine and many other mining projects obviously gave Chañaral's
demographic development a significant boost. Another factor may be the
new route and the importance of the
Pan-American Highway.
