Photo: The Panamerican Highway (Km 1037) near Quebrada Carrizalillo,
near the border of the Antofagasta Region.
Where the desert is really desert. There is no tree, shrub etc.
At the horizon on the left, a conical hill can be seen in the mist:
Cerro Doña Inés
- close to the Salar de Pedernales.
(Kodak14569; W. Griem 2007).
The Pan-American Highway is in good condition (except after
torrential rains or alluvial) - the number of vehicles between
Chañaral and Antofagasta is small, it is the only paved connection
between the Atacama Region and Antofagasta Region. It is a unique
landscape, the morphology the infinite distances, the infinite
straight lines of the road. It is still something unique, something
very special of planet earth: the Atacama Desert.
Description:
Location: Taken from the Panamericana between Chañaral and Taltal
Next town: Chañaral (70 km)
Petrol: Chañaral (70 km)
The place: The Panamericana is well developed (asphalted, with a hard
shoulder etc.) - if you take some time, interesting panoramic shots can
be made. Nearby is the
Pan de Azucar National Park, but the landscape is unique.
